| Title: | The Auld Hoose - Edinburgh |
| Category: | Bars / Pubs |
| Rating: |
The Auld Hoose is guaranteed to thrive with being different. The bare wooden floors, neutral walls and central bar all point to an atmosphere that is repeated across the city.
But on closer inspection, this pub differs in several ways. For a start, the selection of beers is impressive, with Wychwood’s Hobgoblin among the options, and there are 24 whiskies to choose from. With a good selection of ciders and other drinks to entise to almost everyones taste.
Then there’s the fact that it’s the venue for several student societies, perhaps lured in by the permanent discount they receive on food which is 10% for most of the year and doubled up at special times like the begining of the academic year.
But the thing that really makes this place stand out is a juke box, rightly billed as alternative, that features music by goth, metal and punk bands known only to connoisseurs. But it clearly does the trick for drinkers of all ages, as well as many diners.
That are attracted by a menu featuring pub favourites but also seeking to be different, with a filling dish of venison stovies served in a giant Yorkshire pudding and a heaped sharing bowl of nachos that is claimed to be the biggest in Edinburgh.
That ive not seen anyone finish if there eating alone or with just one other person. I would say it would take 4 - 6 people sharing to finish it them off. well worth the challenge to any big eaters out there.
Verdict: One of the best pubs ive ever been too! might not be to everyones taste but it suites me very well.
