First and foremost, DO NOT ORGANISE A PRE-BOOKED TRIP. This is the best natural attraction i've ever seen and requires you hiring a car and enjoying the road trip there with all the freedom you want.
Most people book with attraction sites or attraction agents in Vegas but these will charge you well over the odds and will cram in everything into one day. Book a car through Dollar which are half the cost of everyone else and drive your self, you will have the freedom of stopping off at Hoover Dam (which is amazing) and seeing the sites YOU want to see. Dont be put off by the helicopter rides etc, if you want to do this you can still book them at the Grand Canyon for less. The local town of Tusayan has several hotels and a steak house is perfect for an over night stay to catch the sunrise over the Grand Canyon. We paid $100 for a room for four which we had to haggle but if you arrive late at night they will usually give you cheaper.
If your worried about getting lost, then all car hires come with Sat Nav so finding the Grand Canyon is easy.
When you finally arrive the view is AMAZING! Try and get a Sunrise and mid-day shot as it looks so different!
